FELTON JOHN
Detroit, MI

An emerging international DJ and producer needed to transform a compact studio into an immersive DJ and music production studio tailored to their evolving practice. Designed as both a workspace and a creative refuge, this project is the beginning to an ongoing material and technical investigation between the client and architect.

A central focus of the design is the strategic testing and deployment of felt as a low-cost, adaptable acoustic material. By experimenting with layering, modular panel configurations, and selective routing to create lighting effects, the project explores how felt can achieve targeted sound absorption without relying on more expensive or rigid systems. This exploration not only elevates the room’s acoustic performance but also serves as a demonstration of CHYDUK’s design ethos, rooted in accessibility, material curiosity, and creative problem-solving.

Before felt installation, drywall only.

After batten and felt installation.

The charts above measure frequency response of the room captured at a specific listening position (in front of the DJ’s workstation) before the felt was installed and after. In the first chart, the response is uneven across almost the entire spectrum of frequencies, suggesting strong reflections and standing waves typical of hard surfaces. In the second, you see a relatively even response. Although variations exist, they are tighter and more consistent.

Technically sharp yet materially inventive, the studio demonstrates how thoughtful design and humble materials can shape an environment worthy of an artist stepping onto the international stage. It is a space calibrated for sound, identity, and growth—built on a foundation of experimentation, efficiency, and creative intent.

“Quote about how she’s constantly adapting how she works in this space and how this suits those needs flexibly, or how the working relationship with chelsea resulted in a better design, etc.”
